Happy Easter from the Powells!

  

We celebrated Easter a lot this week. 

 

I visited Melody's class and made ressurection rolls and stain glass crosses. 

 

I intended on taking pictures but, as it turns out, 14 excited kindergarteners is a lot of comotion and choas and it was all I could do to get the rolls and crosses made. Forget about walking around with a camera!

 

I also visited Jack's class and made ressurection rolls and read this book.  If you haven't read it, I thoroughly recommend it.

I intended on taking pictures there too.  Surprisingly, 3rd graders also create a lot of comotion.

 

We participated in our church's annual Easter egg hunt.

 

I know what you're thinking.  But no, the hunt was not at Prince Charming's castle.  Just at a park for us commoners.   

 

 

I love this picture.  Charlie and his friends.  The girls are in their beautiful fancy dresses complete with their babs. And there's Charlie.  In his soccer uniform.  Unlike Melody, he would qualify as a commoner.

 

 

 

We made bunny cupcakes for some neighbors and friends.  And kept a few for ourselves as well.

 

 Melody has some mad cupcake decorating skills.  She decorated these bunnies all by herself! 

 

 

We painted and dyed eggs.

 

 

We made more ressurection rolls.  And this time I did get a picture!

 

 

We got Easter baskets

 

We went to church and then out to brunch with friends.

 

We stopped and smelled the flowers.

 

 

 

And we attempted a few family pictures. (In case you are wondering, Melody is "posing", Charlie is being a bunny, and Jack wanted to make sure I was able to get the flowers in the picture.)

 

 

With this crew, it's easy to get some goofy ones.  The goofiness is apparently inherited from someone...

 

 

And we tried for some sweet ones too.  Of course, Charlie just prefers to be goofy.

PSF and characters

If you're a frequent reader on my blog, you're aware of my son's love of books.

A few weeks ago, right before school ended, they had Character Day, where each student came dressed as a favorite character from a book they read.

Jack initially wanted to be Batman and wear his Batman jammies. Unfortunately, he hasn't actually read a Batman book so that wouldn't work.

Then, much to my delight dismay, he began listing all the Dr Seuss characters he liked. I was pretty nervous as I know I'm not talented enough to sew a Thing 1 or Thing 2 costume. Please. I can barely sew a button.

I was thrilled when he decided to go as Jack, from the Magic Tree House series.

Who better, after all?!

The only part of the costume we were missing were Jack's glasses.

Thankfully, Captain had left a pair of reading glasses here a few weeks ago so we popped out the glass and viola!

A perfect Jack.

PSF and bookworms

We are a family of bookworms.

I've always been a bookworm. Jack was born with the bookworm gene and Melody has developed a love of books as well. I've even converted Alex into (mostly) a bookworm.

This is a small sample of the books currently on my reading list. I've blogged before about my favorite books as well.

Charlie was the black sheep in the family. He was not a natural book lover. And despite our consistent efforts of reading to him daily, he was totally uninterested.

Enter the Doggy Book.

He received this book for his birthday and he will read it over and over and over.

He's still not crazy about other books but he's warming up. Now he'll sit and listen to a few pages of a different book before getting the doggy book.

I guess that's a start, right?

friends, pumpkins, and better parenting

As we had a lot of fun stuff going on this weekend, I decided to do an update.

Parent conferences were taking place at Jack's school on Friday so he had the day off. (I know you're wondering...he got a stellar review and received all Es and Ss on his report card!) After my parent/teacher conference Friday morning we were happy to get to spend the afternoon with our friends the Snellings. Yes, we took our customary picture, however, all the ones I got were so bad that I couldn't even bring myself to post them. It was difficult to get a good shot of six excited children (ok, baby John was pretty chill) but I actually think I had some weird setting on my camera that made all my pictures turn out like crap badly.

On Friday night and Saturday morning I was fortunate to hear Dr. Tedd Tripp, author of Shepherding A Child's Heart speak. I had heard good things about this book and learned so much at the seminar. I wish I had read the book 5 years ago! There are two verses that are basically the foundation of Dr. Tripp's parenting philosophy; Proverbs 4:23 and Ephesians 6:1-3. His philosophy is that parents should focus on the reasons behind the child's behavior, not just the behavior. God has given us authority, as parents, over our children and it's our job to claim that authority and use it to teach our children to submit to God's authority. I have started reading the book and encourage you all to do so as well.

We went on our annual excursion to pick out the pefect pumpkin on Saturday as well. It was really cold. You might not be able to tell how cold it is since we are just wearing measly sweaters and light jackets. Obviously I was ill prepared for how cold it actually was and did not dress my children properly. I'm bummed too because I had gotten this really cute hat for Melody and it would have been the perfect day for her to wear it.

Then it was on to the important stuff. Seeing who was stronger, of course!

And let's not forget about finding the perfect pumpkin. Melody thought this was it. "It's so cuuute!" she proclaimed.

And of course we took a little time out to be silly

before we ran off again!

So, it seems that along with New Year's Resolutions this year, I've also taken on a New Year's Addiction. As if my Twilight addiction wasn't bad enough. I've become totally addicted to blogging. Every few minutes I'm texting myself topics I've deemed blog-worthy. I have about five posts partially finished, although you'll have to wait for them to be published; we're out of town this weekend and I need access to my computer to post pictures with them. Most of them are kid-related, but not all, and a few are quite witty if I do say so myself. However, that's not the worst of it. The worst by far is the blog-stalker I've become. (Should I even be admitting this??) As I've posted and checked out other blogs I follow, I've been led to many (wayyy too many) other blogs. Maybe I need to add bloggers anonyomous to the list of activities I want to participate in this year? So, fellow bloggers, has this happened to any of you? Is this just blogger-newbie behavior that will subside? And, more importantly, do you have any interesting blogs I can read?
